Our Program
Fresh Start has helped 100’s of unhoused veterans with emergency housing services to stabilize their health and housing while preparing them for independent living, so they can once again become economically self-sufficient members of the community. Homelessness among Veterans is not just a personal tragedy—it reveals larger systemic challenges, from mental health and housing shortages to barriers in civilian reintegration. These challenges place pressure on public resources and demand unified, strategic action.
Fresh Start models the evidence based Therapeutic Community approach in restoring our homeless Veterans to dignity, productivity, and purpose. The therapeutic community is a proven, cost-efficient method for treating substance abusers, particularly those facing social and psychological challenges.
Furthermore, it creates an enviroment where belonging at Fresh Start is both felt and practiced daily. Participants engage in structured programs such as Peer Counseling, Recovery Education, Relapse Prevention, and more, that affirm their worth and reignite their agency. Residents are seen, heard, and equipped with tools to reclaim self-sufficiency from benefits navigation to employment readiness. In 2024 alone, Fresh Start helped 71 men off the streets, reduced 12,780 homeless bed nights in San Francisco, and achieved a 64% success rate in transitioning participants into permanent housing or reunification with family.

Our Mission
To restore men to dignity, responsibility, and purpose; to remove unhoused Veterans from the streets or habitation unfit for humans and unworthy of their sacrificial service; to turn their despair into hope and optimism; to rebuild their self-respect and self-esteem while facilitating improvement of their overall health and housing situation.
At Fresh Start we’ve seen firsthand how transformative a safe place to live can be for our nation’s unhoused veterans. Imagine a veteran, recently discharged, facing the crushing weight of homelessness—nowhere to go, no stability, just trying to survive day by day. That’s where we step in.
With programs like ours, veterans gain access to transitional housing, case management, and healthcare tailored to their needs. In an average year, we can help over 60 veterans leave the streets and begin their journey to a stable purpose filled life.
